Conference Interpreters

The term conference interpreting is a kind of collective term under which both simultaneous and consecutive interpreting are subsumed. There are also smaller subtypes such as liaison interpreting and escort interpreting, which are also offered by professional conference interpreters.

Conference interpreters during the corona pandemic

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event settings in which conference interpreters are used have expanded. These can range from Zoom meeting interpreters to simultaneous interpreters in hybrid settings and traditional face-to-face events.

Why do conference interpreters work in teams?

Due to the high level of concentration with which conference interpreters work, they are not deployed alone, but in teams of at least 2 interpreters. This gives the conference interpreter who is not interpreting the opportunity to rest his or her brain a little, although conference interpreters always listen to each other and support their colleague with notes (technical vocabulary, figures and other notes). This makes conference interpreters real team players.

Who can call themselves a conference interpreter?

Conference interpreter is not a protected job title. As an organizer, it is therefore worth taking a close look. Conference interpreters with whom Klemke Language Services works have generally completed a degree in conference interpreting. As a rule, they are also members of national or international associations for conference interpreters such as the VKD in the BDÜ e.V. or aiic. The associations’ admission criteria are intended to ensure that conference interpreters can demonstrate professional training and professional practice.

Conference Interpreters

As Conference interpreters are specialized interpreters who interpret multilingual events, presentations, committee meetings (supervisory board, board of directors, etc.), sales conferences, press events, etc. u. and more as simultaneous or consecutive interpreters in online, hybrid or face-to-face settings from one or more target languages. At most events, so-called simultaneous interpreters are used to translate the spoken word almost in real time. If interpreters do not work simultaneously, but translate in sections (e.g. at a gala event or negotiation), they are referred to as consecutive interpreters. To work as a conference interpreter, you not only need high-quality university training as an interpreter, but also knowledge of the language and culture of the speakers and listeners. Equally important are qualities such as professionalism, flexibility, strong nerves, responsiveness, stamina and customer orientation. When are conference interpreters used? At international conferences, the use of conference interpreters is crucial to ensure that the content of the presentations can be understood by all members of the audience in their respective languages. At events in which different nationalities take part, but the hosts, for example, are from different countries. As conference participants come from Germany, international guests can easily understand and follow the presentations with the help of conference interpreters. Depending on the conference, this ensures organizers a loss-free, content-rich discussion, the implementation of the content conveyed (e.g. at sales conferences) or the impressive international presentation of a new product. Conference interpreters translate the spoken word from one language into another almost in real time, enabling the event to run smoothly and communication to be loss-free.
