Qualification

When checking the qualifications of interpreters, it is advisable to pay particular attention, as the professional titles ‘interpreter’, ‘conference interpreter’, ‘simultaneous interpreter’ or ‘liaison interpreter’ are not protected.

Qualifications: The profession of conference interpreter is demanding and training is usually provided by a university degree. In Germany, the university courses for conference interpreters (degree: Diplom-Dolmetscher) were converted to the Master of Arts (MA) in Conference Interpreting or Master of Arts in Conference Interpreting as part of the Bologna Process. This also enables graduates of other university courses to acquire the qualification as an interpreter (MA) in a further course of study. Private schools and other institutions also offer interpreting examinations, but these are not equivalent to those offered by universities and universities of applied sciences and are therefore often not recognized by international organizations and language services at public authorities. * With the kind permission of VKD im BDÜ e.V.
